Dan Lewis · Marketing & communications leader

Senior marketing and communications leadership for organizations with a story worth hearing.

Most organizations do work worth talking about, and most of it never reaches the people who would care. I’ve spent fifteen years closing that gap at Sesame Workshop, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Visa — shaping the narrative, building the channels to carry it, and giving teams a system that keeps it going.

What changes when I join your team

I work as your senior marketing and communications lead — fractional, embedded, or on a defined project. The work falls into three parts, and most engagements touch all of them.

01

A story that holds together

Your leaders, your website, your newsletter, and your social channels tell the same story, in a way people remember.

Includes
  • Narrative, messaging, and brand voice
  • Executive communications and thought leadership
  • Launches, milestones, and sensitive moments
02

Audiences that grow

Channels built around where your audience already spends its time, measured against outcomes that matter to the business.

Includes
  • Digital channel strategy across web, email, and social
  • Social media and newsletter programs
  • Internal and employee communications
  • Campaigns and events, with paid and press partners
03

A team that runs on a system

Playbooks, cadences, and reporting that make good work repeatable, designed to keep running after I step back.

Includes
  • Operating playbooks and measurement
  • Change management and platform adoption
  • AI adoption and team workflows

How I work

Audience first, measured by outcomes, and steered by data — across paid, earned, shared, and owned media, with my own hands-on work in the channels you control.

  1. 1
Start with the audienceWho they are, where they already are, and what would make them pay attention.
  2. 2
Agree on the outcomeOne or two numbers that matter to the business, set before anything gets made.
  3. 3
Let the data steerTest, read the results, and move time and money toward what’s working.

A note on AI. I use it throughout — research, production, and measurement — so a small team can keep a real publishing cadence. The judgment stays human, and your team keeps the workflows when we’re done.

Selected work

A few of the problems I’ve been brought in to solve.

Visa

A CEO mandate to launch the company’s first internal social platform

I led the launch of Viva Engage across the enterprise, with a cross-functional team of technologists and change managers.

90% of employees were using it monthly within six weeks — 55% above the industry benchmark.

Sesame Workshop

One of the world’s best-loved brands, with a social program just getting started

I built the nascent social program into a full operation and set the brand voice it still runs on, then rebooted the email program from scratch.

25M+ followers, a Clio Award, and an email list grown from zero to 150,000 in 18 months.

Warner Bros. Discovery

A corporate brand to carry through one of the largest media mergers

I directed digital strategy across web, newsroom, and social, and built an employer-brand storytelling program from scratch.

Followers grew 2–3x across channels while engagement doubled.

Licensing International

A global trade association that needed its marketing to work as one

As fractional marketing lead, I’m connecting content, social, PR, and events across an industry in more than fifteen countries.

Its first event-promotion playbook is now the standard for its flagship summits.

What I’m thinking about

I write every week, and I’ve been publishing for most of my career. It’s the best way to see how I think before we talk.

The Comms Stack

My weekly newsletter for communicators on channels, audiences, and putting AI to work.

Now I Know

A daily newsletter of surprising true stories that I’ve written for sixteen years. It won a Webby Award.

Books and bylines

The three-book Now I Know series (Adams Media, part of Simon & Schuster), and writing in The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, and Smithsonian.

A bit more about me

I’ve spent my career on the same problem from a lot of angles: helping good organizations get their story to the people who need to hear it. At Sesame Workshop that meant parents and fans. At Warner Bros. Discovery it meant employees, candidates, and the press during a merger. At Visa it meant a global workforce. Today, at Licensing International, it means an industry spread across more than fifteen countries.

Before communications, I practiced labor and employment law and ran a sports community site before it was acquired by Wikia.
